Bob Dylan sound engineer Mark Howard fights cancer

An online fundraising page has been set up to support the sound engineer who’s worked with Dylan, Neil Young and Emmylou Harris

Sound engineer Mark Howard, best known for his work on Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind, is fighting an aggressive form of cancer, reports Rolling Stone

A year on from being treated for skin cancer, the disease has now spread to his lungs and brain.

As a producer, engineer and mixer – often collaborating with producer Daniel Lanois – Howard has been involved with some highly-acclaimed and sonically ambitious albums including Neil Young’s Le Noise, Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball and Willie Nelson’s Teatro.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by friend and collaborator Emily O’Halloran, who explained: “We need to raise enough money to pay his rent, bills and living expenses for a year or two,” said his friend and collaborator Emily O’Halloran, who set up the GoFundMe page. “This will give him the time to finish treatment, regain his health and beat this.”

In 1998, accepting the Album of the Year Grammy for Time Out of Mind, Dylan said, “Mark Howard – can’t forget that… We got a particular type of sound on this record, which you don’t get every day.”
