This viral video inspired me and thousands of others to pick up a guitar – now it’s been remade by its original creator
It’s 2005. Your ambitiously swooped side bang is blocking half of your vision, and you’re scrolling through a newly launched website called YouTube. You stumble upon a video of a guitarist rocking through Pachelbel’s Canon, and your life is forever changed.
Yes, that viral video that kickstarted an interest in guitar for thousands, has been remade by its original creator, a guitarist known as funtwo. The video sees him playing the very same guitar from his cover – an ESP Alfee Custom SEC-280TC — and has been published on Neural DSP’s YouTube channel in honour of its Black Friday sale launch.

Funtwo made the original video after one of his friends introduced him to YouTube, which at the time he’d never heard of before. The original piece was of course composed by Johann Pachelbel (it’s often played at weddings), and the Canon Rock version played by funtwo was first arranged by JerryC.
Neural DSP says it wanted to get in on this special anniversary remake not only to launch its sale, but also to “celebrate the guitar community”. It explains, “For many of us, the online guitar community was just beginning to take shape when we started playing; YouTube was new, social media was MySpace, and discussions about gear and tone primarily took place on forums.
“But in 2005, there was one video that we all saw. One video that everybody saw. One video that was once the most-viewed video on YouTube. It was the first YouTube video that a lot of people ever saw, and it even inspired many people to begin playing.”
It goes on to add: “Whether you’re seeing this for the first time, or, like us, the nostalgia of a 20-year-old piece of internet history hits you, we hope this can serve as a little reminder that ultimately we’re all part of this community because we love guitar.”
