“He was so proud of himself”: Paul McCartney’s wholesome reaction after playing with the Rolling Stones on Hackney Diamonds
Every musician has heroes, even one with such stature as Paul McCartney. Yep, most artists would kill for the chance to work with the Beatles legend, but when Macca had the chance to work with the Rolling Stones on their 2023 album Hackney Diamonds, it was he who was starstruck.
McCartney actually offered up backing vocals alongside John Lennon to two Stones tracks in 1967: Dandelion and We Love You, the latter often regarded as one of the band’s most experimental songs.
But it would be nearly 60 years until Macca worked alongside the Stones in the studio once again: just about enough time for his starstricken barometer to reset.

The past few years have seen enough collaboration to make up for lost time, though, as Paul McCartney played bass on both Hackney Diamonds’ Bite My Head Off, and Covered in You, from the Stones’ latest album Foreign Tongues, released earlier this month. Both were recorded during the same sessions.
And in a new interview with Classic Rock, Ronnie Wood recalls McCartney’s reaction after contributing to Hackney Diamonds.
“He always set it as one of his ambitions, and after he played on Hackney Diamonds he said: ‘I played with the Rolling Stones.’ He was so proud of himself, you know?” says Wood. “And from the same sessions we kept the Covered in You song and used that again.”
Last year, Andrew Watt – who produced both Hackney Diamonds and Foreign Tongues, as well as Paul McCartney’s latest solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane – also recalled Macca’s wholesome reaction to recording with the Rolling Stones.
“He got to just be the bass player in the band, and he fucking loved it,” Watt said. “As I was walking Paul out of the studio, he said, ‘I just fucking played bass in The Rolling Stones, and I’m a fucking Beatle!’”
As for whether the Rolling Stones plan to tour following the release of Foreign Tongues, Ronnie Wood says he and Mick Jagger “never stop wanting to play”, but whether they do depends on Keith Richards.
“Anything’s possible,” he says. “We just, you know, toss a coin and see how it lands. That’s the way we’ve always played it.”
