David Gilmour’s strap breaks onstage during Comfortably Numb – and is fixed just in time for his guitar solo
Have you ever had a guitar string snap or a pick break when you least expected it? Well, fear not; it happens to guitar legends, too, as David Gilmour recently found out.
During his 28 September show at the Circo Massimo in Rome, the Pink Floyd guitarist’s strap became detached on stage while he performed Comfortably Numb, and a stage hand had to quickly rush to the rescue in time for its iconic guitar solo.

In fan-filmed footage, when the rear end of his guitar strap detaches, Gilmour is seen trying to fix it while continuing to sing the track’s chorus. When he realises the strap has completely snapped, he waves over a crew member to supply him with a new black Fender Stratocaster just in time for the solo. See the moment below:
While it’s unclear if it’s the exact same one, the broken strap looks to be one once owned by Jimi Hendrix, and purchased by Gilmour’s wife Polly in 2006 from an auction for his birthday. The strap could, of course, be a replica, but its distinctive white crosses suggest it’s the real deal.
Gilmour isn’t the only artist to make it through an on-stage slip-up. Earlier this year, Paul Gilbert recently recalled his biggest live blunder and we can’t forget DJ and metalhead Sullivan King accidentally launching his guitar at a photographer instead of a guitar tech. If you’re playing live, you’re bound to have some bad luck creep up on you.
Damaged guitar strap aside, Gilmour’s Luck and Strange tour is still rolling ahead. The guitarist will be performing at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall next week for seven consecutive days (9-15 October). You can buy tickets at David Gilmour’s official website.
