“You have witnessed a revolution”: Guitar Player ceases print publication after 57 years

Guitar Player will release its final print issue this December.
Editor-in-Chief Chris Scapelliti today announced that the magazine will cease print publication after 57 years in the business, transitioning fully to an online format.

The move marks the end of an era for the world’s oldest guitar magazine, which has chronicled the evolution of the six-string and its music for nearly six decades. Founded in 1967 by Bud Eastman, the magazine quickly established itself as the first dedicated publication to celebrate the instrument, its players, and the culture surrounding them.
Over the years, Guitar Player served as a popular resource for guitar enthusiasts, offering everything from in-depth interviews with legendary guitarists like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen to gear reviews and instructional content.
The final print issue, available for purchase starting 15 October, will feature a special interview with Jimmy Page about the gear behind Led Zeppelin’s sound as well as his recent relationship with Gibson.
“You have witnessed a revolution,” Scapelliti reflects in his final editorial for Guitar Player.
“When Guitar Player made its debut in 1967, it marked a new era for guitar. For the first time, the instrument was celebrated in a regularly published magazine devoted to furthering guitarists, guitar gear and its makers, and guitar virtuosity. What founder Bud Eastman began laid the first stone of an empire that would go on to launch many other magazines – including Bass Player, Frets, and Keyboard – publish books, release records and videos, and much more.”
“Guitar Player’s success also opened the door for numerous other titles, including our sister magazine Guitar World, further enriching the lives of guitarists everywhere. And now our print run has come to an end.”
“With this [December 2024] issue, Guitar Player will move fully online to guitarplayer.com, where we’ll continue to bring you the same great content you’ve come to expect, as well as video interviews and lessons, and more.”
