Robert Fripp is recovering from a heart attack, but is in classic Fripp spirits: “I was in A&E not knowing what was going on – and an orderly came along and shaved my balls!”
Robert Fripp has shared a health update with fans after suffering a heart attack and undergoing two surgeries back in April.
In a video alongside his wife and fellow artist/collaborator Toyah Willcox for their Upbeat Moments regular YouTube segment, Fripp explains that he originally thought his chest pain was a symptom of acid reflux. Though detailing an “harrowing” two weeks, the duo manage to keep their usual peppy and humorous spirits up, as they find themselves in fits of laughter recalling how Fripp – much to his surprise – ended up having his testicles shaved for surgery.

Fripp became unwell when he was set to fly to Italy to perform at the Orchestra Of Crafty Guitarists event at Castione della Presolana in Bergamo last month. He arranged to see a doctor upon his arrival in the country, and later ended up in intensive care. The King Crimson legend was eventually told he had a trifurcated artery, and had two stents fitted across his two surgeries.
“I was in A&E not quite knowing what was going on other than I knew they were going to do something and an orderly came along and shaved my balls! Now the dear man, I really didn’t wish his job on him at that point,” Fripp says in the video through laughter.
Though teary and grateful that Fripp is on the road to recovery, Willcox goes on to share that some translation issues between him and the doctors led to Fripp undressing when he’d only been asked what he wanted to eat.

After his surgeries, Fripp was able to go to the event at Castione della Presolana, which he says was not him going back to work, but rather him getting to “play with his friends”. He remains on the mend, and their usual Sunday Lunch covers series will continue in the meantime.
