Are boutique gear brands planning something big for a #blackedxout campaign?

Over the last day or so, numerous guitar companies have taken to Instagram to post a cryptic message, #blackedxout, with the above visual.
What does it mean? Your guess is as good as ours. All of the brands that have jumped on this social media campaign have remained tight-lipped about it, only insinuating that something big is coming. What we do know is that it looks like only boutique companies are in on “it”. Builders that have shared the post include Friedman Amps, Dunable, Zvex Effects, Wampler, Old Blood Noise Endeavors, EarthQuaker Devices (see below), Death By Audio, Land Devices, Meris, JHS and more.

Fan theories about #blackedxout range from a coordinated Black Friday sale to a massive giveaway to a gear festival of sorts. While all of these are plausible, they remain theories at press time.
Also, while cryptic posts by guitar companies are nothing new – Fender (see below), Gibson, Strymon and more have done similar before – a coordinated social media campaign of this magnitude is unprecedented, so it’ll interesting to see what it comes up to.
