Dave Grohl on the six-string connection between Foo Fighters and the late Trini Lopez
Though their careers spanned vastly different musical eras, Dave Grohl revealed through a series of Tweets yesterday (12 August) how the late Trini Lopez played a large role in the Foo Fighters’ sound.
“Today the world sadly lost yet another legend, Trini Lopez. Trini not only left a beautiful musical legacy of his own, but also unknowingly helped shape the sound of the Foo Fighters from day one,” explained Grohl in his Tweets.
The Foo Fighters frontman revealed the six-string connection between the two to be Lopez’s signature Gibson guitar – which Grohl played across Foo’s entire discography.
“Every album we have ever made, from the first to the latest, was recorded with my red 1967 Trini Lopez signature guitar,” Grohl wrote. “It is the sound of our band, and my most prized possession from the day I bought it in 1992.”
“Thank you, Trini for all of your contributions. You will be missed by many, remembered by all. RIP Trini Lopez”

The Trini Lopez Standard combined elements of the ES-335 and the Firebird was one of two instrument collaborations between Lopez and Gibson, conceived in the mid-60s. The guitar was also adopted by Noel Gallagher. The other, dubbed the Trini Lopez Deluxe was a variation on the Barney Kessel model.
News of Trini Lopez’s death was first reported by Palm Springs Life. The If I Had A Hammer star passed away on 11 August at 83. The cause of death is thought to be COVID-19.
