Dunlop has launched a signature Mick Ronson Cry Baby wah with a little help from Bob Rock

Dunlop has honoured Mick Ronson with a new Cry Baby wah pedal in his name, inspired by the late guitarist’s own early Italian-made model.
The pedal was first unveiled at NAMM back in January, and is officially available to purchase now. Offering a stunning sparkling blue and red design, the Mick Ronson Cry Baby was brought to life with the assistance of legendary producer Bob Rock – a friend and collaborator of Ronson’s.

Ronson used his Cry Baby Wah in a set, fixed position to serve as a filter, and it became key to his unique tone. This sound can be heard across countless Ronson works, particularly within his contributions across David Bowie’s catalogue.
Rock managed to keep hold of the original Cry Baby used by Ronson, and was happy to loan the pedal to Dunlop and help with the testing process when it decided to make the iconic Ronson wah sound available to all.
Dunlop says the vintage components in the original gave it a “truly singular sound”, so with matched specs, the brand’s engineers set out to recreate that very tone. Most notably, the pedal features a custom inductor to replicate the higher frequency response and subtler peak of its inspiration. The team has also reproduced the fast initial sweep of the potentiometer, which offers an instant reactivity “like nothing from the modern era”, and have included period-accurate low-gain transistors and value-matched resistors for a distinctive EQ curve.
Rock says, “You place the wah, and leave it there, and that’s the tone. It’s all over every record he ever made, and I’ve used it on every record since I got it. Dunlop’s engineers spent the time and sent me the prototypes, and we nailed that sound.”

The Mick Ronson Cry Baby is available now at a number of retailers for $249.99. You can find out more via Dunlop.
