Five of the best amps from Summer NAMM 2019
Summer NAMM 2019 may have only lasted for three days, but we’ve already been introduced to a wealth of new and exciting amplifiers. Missed the action in Nashville, Tennessee? Here are our picks of the best new pedals we spotted at the annual musical instruments show.
EHX 70s Dirt Road Special reissue
EHX stepped back in time to re-release the 1970s Dirt Road Special. Reimagined with modern electronics and enhanced durability, the updated solid-state amp arrives as a compact 40-watt, 1×12 unit. Unique to the Dirt Road Special are a Bite control – that dials in upper harmonics and crunch – as well as four in-built ‘verbs ported over from the Holy Grail Max reverb pedal.
Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb
Although Fender’s Vintera electric models stole the show at NAMM, the brand’s new Tone Master Deluxe Reverb also caught our attention with its innovative amp modelling capabilities. This amp is touted to capture the character of its forebear with a 100-watt digital power amp – that replicates dynamism and headroom – and a single Jensen N-12K neodymium speaker.
Line 6 Spider V 30 MKII
The big reveal from Line 6 was the second edition of its popular Spider V range. The V 30 MKII is loaded with more than 200 emulations of amps, cabs and effects as well as 128 presets. It also boasts two modes of Classic Speaker and Full-range, the latter of which is suited to acoustic guitars.
Sundragon Standard
This amp is the production-line version of Jimmy Page’s limited-edition Sundragon reissue unveiled earlier this year. Although details are scant, the Standard model is said to share its limited-edition counterpart’s design aspects while still being accessible price-wise.
Blackstar HT Club 40 MkII Kentucky Special
This red tolex-dressed combo is inspired by sounds from the American south. It features two 6L6 power tubes – for pristine cleans – and a 12-inch Eminence Screamin’ Eagle speaker built in Kentucky, USA. Another neat feature is in-built attenuation, that lets you switch from 40- to four-watts in an instance.
