Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours makes a surprise return to the top 10 of the Billboard 200
Over forty years on from its release, Fleetwood Mac‘s highly-acclaimed Rumours has made a surprising reappearance in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week (18 October) charting at No.7.
The resurgence in streams and sales can be traced to a viral TikTok video from user Nathan Apodaca [420doggface208] which came out 25 September. In the clip, Apodaca lip-synced to the Rumours track Dreams, whilst casually sipping on a bottle of Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry juice and cruising on a skateboarding.
The impact of the viral video was staggering. From 25 September to 27 September, MRC Data [Nielsen Music] reported that Dreams racked up 2.9 million on-demand streams in the US – up 88.7% from previous three-day periods. The song also climbed to No.1 on the iTunes charts and as high as No.6 on Spotify’s US chart, according to Music Business Worldwide.
Apodaca’s clip was so popular that even Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks took to filming their own tributes and sharing them on social media.
When Rumours released back in 1977, it spent 31 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. For elevating Rumours back onto the Billboard charts, Mick Fleetwood made a surprise appearance during Apodaca’s interview with the BBC, where he expressed his gratitude to the TikTok star on the air.
