Gojira to perform at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony

Gojira are set to become the first metal band to perform at the Olympics, when they play at the Paris opening ceremony this evening (26 July).
The French rockers will perform alongside Swiss opera singer Marina Viotti – who has experimented with jazz, heavy metal and gospel – for an “original” collaboration, according to Time Out.

We’re not entirely sure what songs Joe Duplantier and co will bring to the ceremony – which will be held on the River Seine – but if they can bring the likes of Silvera and Amazonia to an otherwise metal-averse crowd, we’d love to see it.
Previously, a handful of rock bands and musicians have performed at the Olympics including Kiss, (2002 Salt Lake Winter Games), Jimmy Page (2008 Beijing Olympics), Alanis Morisette (2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics), Snow Patrol (2012 London Olympics), The Who (2012 London Olympics), Paul McCartney (2012 London Olympics), Queen (2012 London Olympics), and Muse (2012 London Olympics).
Other artists confirmed to perform at the 2024 Olympics include Lady Gaga, and Celine Dion, who will duet with French singer Édith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose.
The opening ceremony will begin today (26 July) at 6:30PM BST.
This year, the Olympic Games will present its first-ever non-stadium event, presenting its opening ceremony outdoors.
The event will begin with athletes travelling down the River Seine on custom-made floats passing historic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral and the Louvre.
Orchestrated by French stage director Thomas Jolly, the landmark ceremony will include international and local artists to celebrate and showcase the country’s musical culture.
Jolly told Alternative Press he wants to “show France in all of its diversity” and “that it will be very meaningful for the artists that will perform”.
Outside of their Olympics show, the French metallers will be appearing at KoRn’s 30th-anniversary stadium show, on 5 October, which will take place at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium.
Gojira will be appearing as support acts alongside Evanescence, Scars On Broadway, Spiritbox, Vended and Daron Malakian.
