Grammy-winning guitarist Dan Warner has died
The Latin music community is in mourning at the sudden passing of Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning guitarist and producer Dan Warner, who suffered an apparent heart attack on Wednesday.
According to Billboard, the guitarist – who had been a fixture on the Latin music scene since the early 90s and played on hits for some of its biggest artists – collapsed shortly after playing a set at the Shenanigans bar in Hollywood, Florida, just outside Miami.
Despite not being of Latin descent himself, Warner adored Latin music and that enthusiasm and passion won him many friends in the industry – in his career he worked with everyone from Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin to Michael Jackson, Madonna and Lil’ Wayne.
His stellar guitar contributions made him an in-demand session player, while his work was recognised with a Grammy award for Best Latin Pop album in 2009, as a result of his contributions to Alejandro Sanz’s Paraíso Express.
Warner also won a Latin Grammy for that album, and picked up three others for his work on Calle 13’s Entren Los Que Quieran, Amaury Gutierrez’s Sesiones Intimas and Diego Torres’s Distinto. He was also a member of the Recording Academy Florida Chapter Board.
“There are no words to describe our sadness.” said Gabriel Abaroa Jr, President/CEO of the Latin Recording Academy. “We have lost an extraordinary friend, member, and music maker too soon. His music, craft, and legacy will live on through his work, the lives he touched, and the creators he inspired.”
On social media, friends, colleagues and collaborators were quick to pay tribute to the much-loved guitarist.

Miami DJ/Producer Infamous tweeted, “He was not only a Miami legend but a complete musical genius. Increíble guitar player, and from what close friends have said an incredible person.”
Songwriter and producer Billy Mann described Warner as a friend, and tweeted that he had “Wrote, produced & performed on so many records. Played guitar on so many records I wrote and produced. He did it all with heart.”
Meanwhile, Columbian artist Juanes tweeted in Spanish that, “Part of my soul breaks that good and talented people leave like this Just yesterday I had chatted with him in a WhatsApp group… A hug to all your family and close friends.”
Most recently, Warner had worked with Grammy-winning Puerto Rican-American singer Marc Anthony on his 12th studio album, Opus, which was released in May 2019.
