“I hate playing acoustic”: Why Tony Iommi is pushing himself outside his comfort zone on new solo album
Tony Iommi has a confession to make: he hates playing acoustic guitar, and in fact, he feels he’s not very good at it.
Iommi announced his first solo album in over 20 years this week. Titled From The Dark, it is due to land on 23 October 2026 via BMG, and features Norwegian vocalist Jørn Lande, Mercyful Fate bassist Becky Baldwin, and former Robbie Williams drummer Karl Brazil. Iommi served as co-producer on the album alongside Mike Exeter.

Despite his admittance that acoustic really isn’t his thing, it gets a prominent spotlight on forthcoming track Legacy with a solo right in the middle. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Iommi explains why he chose to explore outside of his comfort zone in this way.
“I did have a couple of acoustic things, but I’ve not used them. I thought I’d keep the album like it is. And not only that, it’s already quite long. We wouldn’t be able to fit them on,” he says.
“I like to do something you don’t really expect. And to be honest, I hate playing acoustic. I’m not very good at playing acoustic,” he confesses, before speaking directly on track Legacy, “On that bit, I just thought it would be nice and different.”
Iommi also discusses the album’s first single, World Alone. Asked if he has to push himself to write up-tempo songs like this single, he responds, “Not really. But I do remind myself [to write them]. When I heard [the rest of] what we’ve got I thought, ‘Well, we need to have some up-tempo tracks and a mid-tempo track just to balance off the album, really.”
