Is the UK finally in good hands? New UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham loves “soaring guitar bands”
Andy Burnham, the New Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is a proud lover of guitar-driven music.
Burnham became Prime Minister on 20 July 2026, taking on the role after the resignation of Kier Starmer. Speaking to The Quietus in 2022 (when he was Mayor of Greater Manchester), which has been newly re-shared by Louder, Burnham explored his admiration of “guitar bands” and his most treasured albums.

In the interview, Burnham picked records from The Beatles, The Stone Roses, Radiohead, and hailed George Best, the 1987 debut record by Leeds-based indie band The Wedding Present, as “the pinnacle of guitar music.”
He said: “I played this to death. I loved it and it had everything for me. I love guitar bands, if there’s anything I’ve always loved it’s soaring guitar bands and George Best is the kind of album that does that better than anything.
“I love David Gedge’s style, that slightly conversational, matter-of-fact thing. Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft, it’s just great. It’s been a constant, I loved it when I first heard it and still do.”
In the piece, Burnham also praised The Strokes’ Is This It? and The Pogues’ Rum Sodomy & The Lash. He also shared his love of The Smiths, specifically their 1984 compilation album Hatful of Hollow.
“I remember everyone at school going on about The Smiths on Top Of The Pops. It was a massive thing when that happened, and someone took a record to school and told me to take it home, it was Hatful Of Hollow. Then I remember buying it at Piccadilly Records. I listened to that to death. It was the first indie record I ever bought,” he said.
