“I’ve been wanting to clear this up for a long time”: System Of A Down bassist says legendary story that he once knocked out Mastodon’s Brent Hinds is untrue

System Of A Down’s Shavo Odadjian has cleared the air on the infamous rumour that he once knocked out Mastodon guitarist, Brent Hinds.
The incident occurred in 2007 after the MTV Music Awards in Las Vegas, with local news outlets pinning the blame on Odadjian for Hinds being knocked out in an altercation. Though Hinds himself and Mastodon’s Troy Sanders have both spoken out on the incident over the years to clarify what actually happened, Odadjian has now had his say on the matter, and says he absolutely did not do it.

In the print edition of Metal Hammer, he says, “I’ve been wanting to clear this up for a long time: I never knocked out Brent Hinds. That’s something Brent was told by I-don’t-know-who. We were in Vegas after the MTV Music Awards, and I was with my friend, [rapper] Reverend William Burke. Brent comes out of a taxi and he’s like, ‘Bro, I love you!’ He was inebriated, swinging his shirt. He kept coming up to hug me. He was very in-my-face.
“My taxi arrived, so I get in, and I look back, and he takes a swing at the dude I was with! He missed, but Burke did swing back. It was self-defence. Brent fell and hit his head and got knocked out. I was five, six feet away,” he explains.
“Security put me in cuffs and took me to jail, but I didn’t do anything! My shoulder got hurt. I said, ‘Check the fucking cameras! I did nothing!’ Once they did, the police came and let me go. I was there for, like, four hours.”
Back in March, Hinds left Mastodon after 25 years with the band. A statement shared to Instagram at the time said the decision for Hinds to part ways with the group was mutual: “We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared,” it continued. “We wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavours.”
In May, it was revealed that Canadian musician Nick Johnston had been recruited as the band’s fill-in guitarist for their live shows, having made his first appearance with the Mastodon crew on the first night of their spring US tour in Chesterfield, Missouri.
