Josh Klinghoffer sued for wrongful death and negligence after allegedly running over and killing a pedestrian

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer is being sued for wrongful death and negligence after allegedly running over and killing a pedestrian in Alhambra, California.
According to AP, the lawsuit was filed Wednesday (10 July) by the family of 47-year-old Israel Sanchez, who died after being hit while walking in a crosswalk on the afternoon of 18 March.

The suit states that Klinghoffer was driving a black SUV with no licence plates and turned left at an intersection with a marked crosswalk when the collision occurred. It also alleges that Klinghoffer was using a cellphone while behind the wheel.
“The pedestrian was thrown and/or dragged across the asphalt where he sustained blunt force trauma to the head, and lay on the pavement until medical transport arrived,” the complaint states (via LA Times).
“Video of the incident shows that defendant Josh Adam Klinghoffer made no braking or slowing motion until after he fatally struck Israel Sanchez, indicating that Defendant was likely driving while distracted.”
Footage (obtained from a neighbour’s Ring camera) of the event shows the musician holding an object above the steering wheel moments before the fatal impact. Sanchez, who suffered blunt force trauma to the head, died from his injuries a few hours later at the hospital. No arrest was made.
Nick Rowley, the plaintiff’s attorney, called the incident a “reckless homicide”.
“They never charged the guy or even wrote him a ticket for blowing through the crosswalk and killing someone,” he said. “This is a horrific injustice.”
Klinghoffer’s legal team has responded to the allegations, describing the incident as a “tragic accident”.
“After Josh struck this pedestrian in the intersection, he immediately pulled over, stopped the car, called 911 and waited until police and the ambulance arrived,” attorney Andrew B. Brettler said in a statement. “Obviously, he’s cooperating with the police throughout the traffic investigation. This was purely a tragic accident.”
Klinghoffer was the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist from 2009 through 2019. He is currently on tour with the band Pearl Jam.
