The Door’s Robby Krieger has announced his first solo record in a decade, The Ritual Begins at Sundown, will be released this spring. Take a listen to the first single from the record, The Drift, which features jazzy intertwined horn lines alongside Krieger’s tight rhythm playing.
Krieger has spoken about how the album is heavily influenced by his love of Frank Zappa. The record, featuring a cover of the Zappa track Chunga’s Revenge, was co-written and produced by Zappa collaborator Arthur Barrow. Krieger’s backing band on the record also features musicians who’ve played alongside Zappa.
Krieger elaborated in a statement about the release: “I was hanging out with my buddy Arthur Barrow and we had some songs we had been fooling around with then we got some other friends involved.”
He also spoke of the Jazz influence present: “When I wrote songs for the Doors, it was always the music first. I think you have to have some musical ability to really understand jazz. When I was young, I didn’t really understand it. It took me a while. I was going to the clubs with John Densmore – before the Doors – to really get an appreciation of jazz. We used to go see Wes Montgomery, Roland Kirk, Miles Davis, stuff like that. At first, I didn’t really get it, but after a while, it sank in and I always loved it after that.”
Krieger was recently seen backing Miley Cyrus on a performance of Roadhouse Blues.
