Boss knows a thing or two about analogue delay – there’s a reason the venerable DM-2 pedals from the 80s now regularly change hands for several hundred bucks or more. But if you want to really get into the weeds of wonderfully organic analogue delay sounds, you need something bigger.

When the DM-101 was released in 2023 alongside the similarly backward-looking RE-202 and SD-3000D, but unlike its fellow big boi delay units, the 101 doesn’t use any digital modelling or other fancy modern DSP tricks. This baby is pure analogue, but with a scope no other Boss analogue delay pedal has ever attempted before.
The specs speak for themselves – eight Bucket Brigade Device chips, 12 delay modes with modulation options for each, onboard presets, tap tempo, stereo output for six of the modes and MIDI. It’s like someone brought all the wonderful bits of a modern high-end modeller pedal from Strymon or Meris but melded it with the authentic tech of the 80s.
Also, and let’s not pretend it doesn’t matter, the choice to ape the timeless look of the Boss CE-1 doesn’t hurt either – it looks unbelievably cool sat on my pedalboard. And sat on my pedalboard this thing has since we reviewed it last year – and I have no plans to shift it.

I’d tried so many different delay pedals over the years – all the big ones you can think of, I’ve either owned, borrowed or reviewed at one point or another – but I was never truly happy until the DM-101.
It’s so intuitive, so straightforward, and yet it’s a powerful and fully featured modern pedal. And the sound! It’s honestly the best sounding suite of BBD sounds I’ve ever heard from the reverb-esque Ambiance to solo-thickening and rockabilly-rousing Reflect and Double Delay and glorious sci-fi stereo sounds of Pan, that happily thrives on that line between spectacular and jarring.
In our review, we claimed that the DM-101 might be the last delay pedal you ever buy, and for me that’s certainly proving the case. It might be the same for you, and if any of what I’m saying has resonated with you, do yourself a favour – this pedal is a whopping 40% off at Sweetwater this Cyber Weekend, don’t miss out!

And if you’re not in the US and still want to save on this absolutely killer pedal, Thomann currently has a very good deal on it too – offering a none to shabby 27% off the retail price too.
