Noel Gallagher’s Definitely Maybe Epiphone Les Paul is up for auction – and it’s expected to sell for up to £80,000
30 years on, Definitely Maybe continues to be a definitive piece of British musical history. A whirlwind of timeless rock ‘n’ roll, Oasis‘s debut is rammed with glorious, lager-doused anthems that modern acts still strive to match.
Despite the magic of their 1994 debut, the Gallagher brothers weren’t quite able to make amends to celebrate the milestone anniversary. According to The Mirror, the pair were hoping to tour the record together before plans fell through. In the end, Liam Gallagher celebrated Definitely Maybe’s 30th birthday on his own.

While Noel wasn’t involved in the tour, he hasn’t entirely forgotten the record’s birthday. He’s marking the occasion in his own way – by flogging the Epiphone Les Paul Standard that he used while recording the record.
In an auction hosted by Sotheby’s, Noel’s Cherry Sunburst Les Paul is expected to fetch between £60,000 and £80,000.
The guitar is a key part of Oasis history. It featured in both the music video and artwork of Oasis’ debut single, 1994’s Supersonic, which earned Oasis their first US chart single. Essentially, the Les Paul played a pivotal role in Britpop’s global takeover.
The guitar also features on multiple iconic Definitely Maybe cuts like Live Forever and Shakermaker.
Noel hasn’t yet commented on the auction, but he has fondly reflected on Oasis’ debut in a recent chat with the Sunday Times Culture magazine. Throughout the nostalgic feature, Noel praises the loutish debut that defined a generation.
“I guess it’s the definitive Oasis album,” he admits. “It has the spirit, the arrogance of youth. Teenage anthems. It’s live – no bullshit. If we’d made only that album, then I’d still be as happy as I am now.”
Noel’s Definitely Maybe Les Paul is just one instrument available as part of Sotheby’s Popular Culture auction. Other pieces include Prince’s Vox HDC-77 blackburst electric guitar and an Abbey Road Steinway Model A Grand Piano used by Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Lady Gaga, the Foo Fighters and more.
The Popular Culture auction will run between 29 August and 12 September 2024. For more info, head to Sotheby’s.
