Peter Frampton’s new Gibson “Phenix” Les Paul Custom VOS has come alive

The Gibson Custom Shop has released an artist model for Peter Frampton: the “Phenix” Les Paul Custom VOS, a recreation of the iconic LP Custom that graced the cover of 1976’s Frampton Comes Alive!

Frampton played the original 1954 Les Paul Custom during his time in Humble Pie and on all his sessions between 1970 and 1980. The guitar earned its nickname, Phenix, after surviving a cargo plane crash in 1980. It was only returned to Frampton some 30 years later.
Now, fans can get their hands on a Phenix of their own, albeit one without the scarring and wear the original has sustained.
The Peter Frampton “Phenix” Les Paul Custom VOS features a weight-relieved mahogany body, matched to a mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard with 22 jumbo frets. Its neck profile is tailored to Peter Frampton’s personal preference.
For pickups, there’s a trio of CustomBuckers, routed to a three-way Switchcraft toggle and control section with CTS pots.
The guitar’s hardware is split between gold and cream finishes to match that of the original Phenix. There are speed knobs, Grover kidney tuning machines, Schaller strap pins and a bone nut. The truss rod cover and 12th fret inlay have also been decorated with Frampton’s signature. As for its finish, the Les Paul comes in an ebony vintage nitrocellulose lacquer.
In a statement, Frampton said he “couldn’t be more pleased” with how the recreation turned out.
“Gibson has gone that extra mile in every area to make this feel and sound the closest to my original, storied Phenix Les Paul Custom guitar,” he said. “The neck and weight of this mahogany guitar will amaze you at how great it feels and how light it is (and it’s even a hair lighter than the Phenix). This is the real deal.”
The Peter Frampton “Phenix” Les Paul Custom VOS is priced at $6,999 and comes with its own hard case.
