Phoebe Bridgers had a migraine waiting on Grammy nomination results: “These things give me a lot of anxiety”

Phoebe Bridgers is in the running to pick up four awards at the 2021 Grammys – and waiting on the nomination results apparently gave her a migraine.
The nominees for the 63rd Grammy Awards were announced this week and Bridgers spoke to the The New York Times yesterday (25 November) about how she learned of her nominations.
“I was in bed with a migraine – these things give me a lot of anxiety,” she said. “Then I saw all these messages from my mom – she was crying and sent a picture of a bottle of champagne she bought two days ago that she hadn’t wanted me to know about, just in case nothing happened.”
The Los Angeles singer-songwriter is nominated in four categories, including Best New Artist, Best Alternative Music Album for Punisher, as well as Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for the song Kyoto.

In a historic first, the nominees for this year’s Best Rock Performance category comprised entirely female artists and female-fronted bands. Bridgers commented on competing with the likes of Fiona Apple, HAIM, Brittany Howard, Grace Potter and Big Thief for the category, saying she’s “honoured to be nominated with those people”.
The 63rd Grammy Awards will be held on 31 January 2021 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. With COVID-19 still a major health concern where large gatherings are concerned, it’s uncertain whether the event will be held in-person or in a virtual capacity.
Bridgers added that, though she hasn’t yet been asked to perform, she hopes “we get to do some semblance of something fun, whether it’s from this apartment or elsewhere”.
The 2021 Grammys also see Fontaines D.C. earn their first-ever nomination. The Irish post-punk quintet’s A Hero’s Death made the shortlist for Best Rock Album. Frontman Grian Chatten said learning about the band’s nomination “was honestly like a phone call from space, it was that heavy”.
