“I would apologise for the loud guitar playing”: Joe Bonamassa pays tribute to his former neighbour, late Star Trek legend Patrick Stewart
Joe Bonamassa has paid tribute to his former neighbour and legendary Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart, who died last week at the age of 86.
In an Instagram post, Bonamassa recalls the actor as a warm and friendly neighbour who always asked him about his music career.
Stewart, best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, died at his Los Angeles home on October 28.

Bonamassa, a self-confessed Trekkie, says Stewart’s death is “a huge loss”. “As a massive fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I grew up knowing him as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It was my favourite show,” he says. “Patrick Stewart was an actor’s actor that went way beyond Star Trek.”
He then shares a more personal memory. “In a former life Patrick was a neighbour of mine. He lived in the house across the street from me and was the nicest, most humble movie star I have ever encountered. He always made a point to say hello and ask me how the music business was. I would apologise for the loud guitar playing and we would have a laugh. Rest in peace, Sir.”

Tributes to Patrick Stewart have come from far and wide, including from SoCal guitarist Mason Stoops, who says the actor and his wife, singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, took him and his partner Brooks into their home after they were forced to evacuate amid wildfires in California in 2025.
“A year that would otherwise have been consumed by grief, confusion and loneliness was instead filled by their warmth, kindness and relentless hospitality,” Stoops writes. “We became our own chosen family. Cocktails and dominoes every evening, followed by arguably the best food Brooks and I have ever had, all made with love by Sunny.”
Stoops said Stewart “never stopped showing up for us”, adding that he helped Brooks choose her wedding dress and Stoops wore Stewart’s suit at the ceremony, which Ozell officiated.
“We are painfully grateful to have spent what time he had left together, playing his favourite songs, sharing our favourite stories, and holding each other close,” he added. “We love and miss you so much Patrick. Thank you.”
