Roger Waters sings ‘Wish You Were Here’ at Julian Assange Rally
Pink Floyd co-founder, Roger Waters, recently appeared at a Julian Assange rally outside the London Home Office and dedicated a version of the 1979 hit Wish You Were Here to the Wikileaks founder.
At the rally he pressed for the release of Assange whilst standing in front of a large banner that read “Don’t Extradite Assange.” Waters asked the crowd “How do we put ourselves in the position of a Julian Assange in solitary confinement, or with that kid in Syria or Palestine or Rohingya, being blown to bits by these people in this building here?”
The former Pink Floyd man also revisited an anecdote about his friend who was a Junior Minister under former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was sent to the airport to meet former Soviet Union President, Mikhail Gorbachev, during the 1980s.
Roger Waters revealed his friend was questioned “President Gorbachev would like to know your opinion on the following question. What do you think would have been different in world history if President Khrushchev was assassinated rather than President Kennedy?” He revealed his friend was unsure how to answer, before Gorbachev answered “President Gorbachev believes it unlikely that Mr. [Aristotle] Onassis would have married Mrs. Khrushchev.”
Following this Waters revealed he would be going to visit Gorbachev in October, before choosing to “shut up now and sing this song.”
Waters sang Wish You Were Here and dedicated the song to Julian Assange, who has been arrested after living at the London Ecuadorian Embassy for seven years. Assange was charged for hacking into a Pentagon network back in 2010.
