Paralympic champion uses her “pick-shaped” Commonwealth Games gold medal to shred sick Megadeth riff
You’ve heard of heavy metal… but what about heavy medal? After bagging gold for her 100m backstroke performance at this year’s Commonwealth Games, Paralympic champion Alice Tai was presented with a remarkably plectrum-shaped medal – and she’s now put it to the test with some Megadeth riffs.
With multiple gold medals under her belt, it goes without saying that the 27-year-old is a pro in the pool. But, when she’s not swimming, she’s also in a band, BLUSH!, and regularly churning out guitar covers on TikTok. Her latest cover sees her working through Megadeth’s Symphony of Destruction with her new pick-shaped medal – and it sounds pretty sick.

When Tai earned the medal in Glasgow last Monday (26 July), she instantly knew she wanted to try playing with it. Speaking to TNT Sport, she spoke about wanting to test out the gold’s “tonal qualities” soon. “I think it looks like a guitar pick which is fun, because I play guitar,” she said. “I’m definitely going to try it out when I get home… might have some interesting tonal qualities.”
In the clip, she also added that it was “heavy” and that she likes “heavy medal” – perhaps a subconscious tease of the heavy metal track she was planning to use it for.

Born with clubfoot, Tai was wheelchair-bound until getting her foot amputated at the age of 12. In the years since, she’s become a swimming menace, as well as earning a neuroscience degree and becoming a confident guitarist, even trying to teach some of her Paralympic peers guitar in the past.
Tai’s guitar playing is varied across her TikTok. At times, she’s noodling along to an acoustic rendition of The Chordettes’ 1954 classic, Mr. Sandman, all before diving into “trashy” versions of Green Day’s American Idiot.

As for Megadeth, the band’s Farewell tour has kicked off without a hitch, with many fans lapping up the band’s cover of Metallica’s Ride The Lightning in particular.
