Sound Travels is a new platform to hire musicians and producers remotely

A new remote-hire platform for musicians, Sound Travels, has been launched, in an effort to keep the wheels of the music industry turning in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
It’s no secret that COVID-19 has put huge strain on the industry, with everything from recording sessions to world tours on hold. And so Sound Travels offers a place for musicians and producers to promote their skills, and themselves. It differs from other platforms such as Fiverr or Upwork, both of which have a broad, general freelancing approach – rather than Sound Travels’ exclusive focus on music.
Since the platform has launched, it’s already seeing signups from professionals credited for high-profile work with artists such as Beyonce, Maroon 5, Patti Smith, Hans Zimmer, and Miley Cyrus. Sound Travels also hopes in the future to expand to feature a list of vetted job opportunities, tutorials on home production and a list of COVID-19 relief resources.
The all-female team behind Sound Travels consists Shruti Kumar (composer, producer, arranger, and conductor), Emily Retsas (bassist for Phoebe Bridgers, Kim Gordon and Fiona Apple), Prudence Rees-Lee (cellist and web developer), and Laura West (artist, designer, editor).
Sound Travels was devised as a solution to counter the impending financial dangers that were warned by the Musicians’ Union – which stated that “90% of those working in the industry have already been affected, with job opportunities down 69% compared to the same period last year.”
