Steve Wilson says “no reason to close the door” on future Porcupine Tree projects

Even though he once insisted otherwise, Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson now says that “there’s no reason to close the door” on future projects from the band.
Speaking to Guitar Player, Wilson, who earlier this month released his solo album The Overview, reveals that while there are no immediate plans, the band has, in fact, discussed the idea of coming together to make music again.

Back in 2018, Wilson broke the hearts of fans when he declared that the odds of a Porcupine Tree reunion were “zero” and that the band was “finished”. The musician said at the time he was “not interested in moving backwards” and was focused entirely on his solo career. It seemed like the band’s final chapter had been written.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Porcupine Tree returned in 2022 with Closure/Continuation, their first album in over a decade. The record was followed by a successful global tour, with performances stretching into 2023.
Now, it appears that Closure/Continuation may not be their final act after all.
Asked about the future of Porcupine Tree once again, Wilson states, “Well, you know, the band have come back. We had a great time making the record and touring. I don’t know if we would tour again, but I think as long as we can find something new that we feel we can do within the context of the band we’d definitely record again.”
“I’ve never been one for closing doors completely — even though I did say that about Porcupine Tree before,” he adds. “But that was partly because I wanted people to focus at the time on what I was doing with my solo career.”
While nothing is set in stone, Wilson confirms that the band members remain in touch and have floated the idea of working together again: “We keep in touch. We’re good friends. We’ve talked about getting together to see what we might produce if we got back together again. So there’s no reason to close the door.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Wilson also reveals his dislike for guitar players who don’t experiment with their tone, saying: “A lot of old-school guitar players, they can play amazing – beautiful technique, beautiful feel. They can play beautiful solos. But sometimes they’re not so innovative with the actual sound.”
