Taylor Swift drops Evermore, her second surprise release of 2020

Taylor Swift has released her second surprise release of 2020, entitled Evermore. It’s been released as a companion to July’s Folklore, and in similar fashion was released just hours after it was announced.
Like its “sister record,” Evermore features a set of more indie-focused collaborations, with this time Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, the Haim sisters and Justin Vernon appearing on and writing for the record.
Announcing the album with hours’ notice on Instagram, Swift explained why another full-length record arrived so soon: “To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in.”
She also spoke about how the multiple-albums-in-a-year woods are uncharted territory for her: “I’ve never done this before. In the past I’ve always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with Folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning.”
And finally, she wrote of how specifically she returned to the storytelling and character-study focus that was present on Folklore: “I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives.”
Evermore is available now, and has arrived alongside a video for its opener Willow. Take a look below:
