Tech 21 announces the Steve Harris Signature SH1
Tech 21 has announced the Steve Harris Signature SH1, a compact bass preamp that aims to replicate the Iron Maiden bassist’s go-to tones.
The unit is powered by Tech 21’s SansAmp technology, a revolutionary FET-based method of simulating a tube amp and speaker cabinet first introduced in 1989. Your tone is shaped by a four-band EQ, with 18dB of cut/boost on each band. Two sets of Level and Gain controls can be toggled between by the leftmost footswitch for easy volume control on-stage. There’s also a wet/dry switch to blend with an unaffected tone, alongside a chromatic tuner.
A bite switch will engage what Tech21 calls a “‘Steve’ boost for extra clank and clarity.” If you’ve ever heard the bass tone on an Iron Maiden record, you should have an idea of what this means – Harris’ tone always seems to jump right through the mix, thanks to its healthy mid presence and top-end.
The amp can run as a pedal before a regular bass amp, or act as an independent preamp, and even comes with an XLR out for going directly into a desk or an interface.
Harris said about Tech 21’s pedal design, “Whatever [Andrew Barta]’s done, he’s made this thing sound like my sound.”
