“The crap that they’re playing on the radio today is bloody awful” Ritchie Blackmore slams modern artists like Taylor Swift that he “cannot relate to
If you hop into Ritchie Blackmore’s truck, you’ll certainly won’t hear any Top 40 hits blasting out of the stereo. In a recent video shared on his YouTube channel, the Rainbow and ex-Deep Purple guitarist has voiced his disdain over the current state of pop music.
“There are so many types of music that I like, but very rarely do I hear it on the radio,” he says. “I’d rather hear talk radio about who’s the latest president… the stuff that bores people to death.”

As he talks, certain notable faces flash on-screen, from Tyler the Creator, to The Weeknd, to Sabrina Carpenter. But Taylor Swift in particular is put in the firing line. “It might be good music, but it’s not something I want to hear…” he explains. “All I hear is Taylor Swift or something, and I find it hard to relate to.”
While Blackmore admits he feels “like an old Granddad complaining about the music they’re playing on the radio at the moment,” he can’t connect with modern artists. He longs for the days of Cream, noting the emotion of tracks like 1968’s White Room. “I feel that back in the 70s, when Eric Clapton was playing, it was thoughtful music,” he explains.
In order to retain his musical passion, Blackmore has dipped back into more “organic” sounds. “I [listen] to old music from the 1500s [and]1400s,” he says. “I’ve also been listening to a few bands that I’ve become friends with in Germany, Czech, Finland and Sweden. They’re still playing music that really excites me.”
Even modern rock and roll has lost its appeal for Blackmore. “I listen to the old rock from the 50s when it was fresh: Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore playing James Burton with Ricky Nelson, the Everly Brothers…” the guitarist lists.
However, he doesn’t blame the younger generation for enjoying different music. “It’s not ‘wrong’,” he insist. “It’s the new generation, what they’re wanting to hear. That’s probably as great to them as the Beatles and Cream and Jimi Hendrix were to me, so I can’t really complain… but I do like to complain and I will complain.”
So, what’s the final verdict, Blackmore? “I think the crap that they’re playing on the radio today is bloody awful,” he concludes.
