Hawk obtained the skateboard in an auction last year, he shared in an Instagram post on February 17. Hawk wrote of the board, “It is an original Jeff Phillips model, hand painted by Kurt Cobain in 1985. Two icons that had immense influence on their respective fields, both of whom passed away tragically and much too young,” adding that he hopes to use the board to raise awareness for emotional health and to help provide resources for those struggling mentally.
On what would have been Cobain’s 56th birthday, 20 February, Hawk announced that he has produced a limited run of photorealistic versions of the skateboard in the form of actual skateboards, prints and stickers. “We kept it real with the original Phillips shape and OG truck-holes, and added KC & JP signatures on the top graphic. All proceeds from these sales will be equally split between the Jed Foundation and The Skatepark Project in order to provide resources for those struggling with mental health, and to create more public skateparks in underserved areas,” he wrote.

The 20 February announcement was accompanied by an Instagram video documenting Hawk travelling to Cobain’s hometown in Seattle, Washington, to meet the original owner of the skateboard, Cameron Ross. For “20 bucks and a chunk of weed,” Ross shares, Cobain painted the image of Iron Maiden’s The Trooper on Ross’ skateboard after Ross happened upon a flyer for commissioned art near Aberdeen’s Rosevear’s Music Center – the place where Cobain would buy his first guitar.
The Kurt Cobain/Jeff Phillips charity skateboards, prints and stickers are available now on Tony Hawk’s website, and are available in limited numbers. A skateboard is priced at $420, prints at $120 and $80, and skateboard size stickers at $35.
