Watch Sturgill Simpson’s hour-long charity live show with a bluegrass twist
Musician Sturgill Simpson recently appeared on stage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, accompanied by a host of Bluegrass musicians for a performance in aid of the MusicCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. Take a look at the full performance above.
The auditorium, given the ongoing global pandemic, was empty aside from the performers onstage; Simpson was joined by Sierra Hull on the mandolin, Stuart Duncan on the fiddle, Mike Bub on the bass, Scott Vestal on banjo), Miles Miller on drums and both Tim O’Brien and Mark Howard on guitar. He performed his songs in a more bluegrass style than normal, as he revealed: “This is how these songs were originally written. And I decided after climbing the ropes of country music stardom and then completely destroying that career to make a rock ‘n’ roll record now I have great ambitions of a life of gravel parking lots and porta-potties. I want to be a bluegrass musician because that’s the music in my heart and soul. It’s the music I was raised on.”
He went on to announce he’s started a two-volume set of albums with the musicians onstage: “We’ve been cutting all these songs again in bluegrass style and I lied to you, we’re not putting out a record – we’re putting out two records. We’re putting out a volume one and a volume two this year.”
Last year (alongside SOUND & FURY, the rock ‘n’ roll record referenced above) Simpson also contributed the theme song to Jim Jarmusch’s offbeat zombie comedy, The Dead Don’t Die. The new records should arrive in the autumn of this year.
