“We’re up against Mumford & Sons. We’re going to beat those c**ts”: Dan Hawkins is confident The Darkness’s new album will go Number 1
The Darkness reckon their eighth album, Dreams on Toast, will have no problem reaching Number One in the UK charts.
Their track record is strong; all five of their albums released since their reunion in 2011 – Hot Cakes (2012), Last of Our Kind (2015), Pinewood Smile (2017), Easter is Cancelled (2019) and Motorheart (2021) – have reached the top 20, with three reaching the top 10.

But with their latest outing – which landed just last week – Justin Hawkins and co are hoping to hit the top spot.
“I think it’ll go Number One,” guitarist Dan Hawkins tells Classic Rock in a new interview. “I am confident. We’re up against Mumford & Sons. We’re going to beat those cunts.”
Dan’s fruity language is, of course, referring to Mumford & Sons latest full-length, Rushmere, which arrived on 28 March, like Dreams on Toast.
As both albums landed on Friday – and chart info is aggregated and published every Friday afternoon in the UK – we’ll have to wait and see whether The Darkness or Mumford & Sons will come out on top.

Elsewhere in the interview, frontman Justin Hawkins speaks on his desire to “subvert” typical rock music tropes, and how he does so, particularly on album opener Rock and Roll Party Cowboy.
“It’s got that gay undercurrent,” he explains. “Rock can be so straight and misogynistic, it drives me mad. I wanted to subvert those tropes.
Last year, The Darkness found their smash hit I Believe In A Thing Called Love back at the top of the charts thanks to none other than Taylor Swift. “Taylor Swift sent me a lovely letter which was waiting for me in the VIP section, talking about how much she loves the song I Believe In A Thing Called Love,” he said. “I was dad of the year, maybe dad of the century, because all of that was a big surprise.”
The Darkness’s latest album Dreams on Toast is out now via Canary Dwarf Limited.
