Cobalt strings on my SR5?

What is the best way for me to change my bass strings if I want to put on Cobalt strings? I heard that you shouldn’t make a kink (sharp bend) before cutting them, but that you should cut the string straight. This is to avoid a broken string with Cobalts. Is this true? I have often read that people had problems when installing Cobalt strings.
