Pink Floyd are releasing 18-carat gold picks worth nearly £6,000
Back in 2023, a Dunlop Tortex pick once owned by Kurt Cobain became the most expensive plectrum ever sold. While the worn, scribbled-on orange pick looks like something you’d find at the bottom of your gig bag, its history earned it $14,678 at auction. Now, Pink Floyd are attempting to compete with the legendary Nirvana pick – and they’re using 18 carat gold.
While the pick is still significantly cheaper than Cobain’s battered pick, this flashy plectrum costs £5,750, or around $7,810. Crafted in collaboration with the Royal Mint, the pick is etched with the artwork from the band’s 1973 release, Dark Side of the Moon, and is “fully functional”… if you’re ballsy enough to go gigging with solid gold in your guitar case, that is.

Only 10 gold picks will be made, so they’re set to be pretty limited edition. However, if you’re not quite in the market for 18 carat gold picks, there is a slightly cheaper silver equivalent available too, which is just £129.50 and is limited to 300.
If you’re not keen to drop hundreds on a pick, there’s also a copper version. So, if you’re not keen to amount any debt, you can always settle for copper for just £39.95.
The collaboration with the Royal Mint isn’t just picks, however. The Royal Mint has also placed Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon artwork on a selection of silver and gold proof coins – which they’ve humorously dubbed their ‘Reverse Side of the Coin’ collection.
The selection of gold, silver and copper releases are apparently they Royal Mint’s way of “honouring” the “influential band”. Speaking on the collaboration, Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coins for the Royal Mint, explains [via Ultimate Classic Rock]: “The iconic prism is instantly recognisable to fans around the world, and Henry Gray has done a remarkable job of bringing it to life with the craft and detail this band deserves. Their influence on music, art and culture is immeasurable, and we’re incredibly proud that The Royal Mint can play its part in preserving that legacy forever.”

Bizarrely, this isn’t the first gold pick we’ve seen this year. Just last month, Paralympic champion Alice Tai bagged gold for her performance in the Commonwealth Games’ 100m backstroke, only to discover her gold medal was curiously plectrum-shaped. It lead to her going home and shredding to Megadeth’s Symphony of Destruction.
