This new tuner could make you sound like Eddie Van Halen – here’s how
Six years after his death in 2020, guitarists still move mountains to try and achieve the sound of legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen. And Peterson reckons its new tuner pedal, the StroboStomp EVH, will help many players to that end.
You might ask: “It’s a tuner. How can it make me sound more like Eddie Van Halen? It doesn’t affect tone and it certainly doesn’t train my fingers to tap lightning fast.”
Well, as Peterson explains, on Van Halen’s self-titled debut album, which arrived in 1978, Eddie used slightly different tunings across its 13 songs in order to “sweeten” the sound of different chords and riffs. Essentially, he was a fan of slightly detuning certain strings on his guitar for a more characteristic sound.

Peterson tuner pedals have incorporated “Sweetened” tunings for some time, allowing guitarists to incorporate tiny pitch offsets by a few cents to flavour their sound. And the new StroboStomp EVH comes loaded with 13 of them, each tailored to the 13 songs on Van Halen’s debut. That’s not all, though; if you want to venture outside the Van Halen sound, the pedal comes with a total of 158 tuning presets, and you can even upload your own custom tunings, too.
Fittingly, the pedal comes outfitted in the classic Van Halen red, white and black Frankenstein stripes, and swaps a mechanical disc piece for a crystal-clear LCD screen which can be set to different colours, perfect for when it’s dark onstage.
Additionally, the pedal might be a good option if you’re a bassist, too, as there are 11 bass presets included also.
“Eddie relied on Peterson tuners as he developed the sound and playing style that made him one of the most influential guitarists of all time,” Peterson writes. “The StroboStomp EVH honors that connection, bringing Peterson’s renowned ±0.1 cent accuracy to a new generation of players.”
The StroboStomp EVH is now available for $179. Learn more at Peterson.
