Vahlbruch Effects launches the tube-powered Kaluna overdrive
Vahlbruch Effects has launched the new Kaluna overdrive pedal, a tube-powered unit that focuses on a rich amp-like blend of overdrive and distortion.
The tube that the analogue circuitry is built around is a 250-Volt ECC83/12AX7. This high voltage level is generated from a standard 9-volt power jack. The high voltage leads to a tone that’s more saturated with overtones, but still has the responsive feel and clarity that tube amplifier preamps are known for. The compression provided by the pedal also inherits the same responsive character of a tube amp.
In terms of controls, things remain in familiar territory. The pedal allows for tweaking of volume and gain levels with the larger outer knobs, while in the centre, there’s a bank of three controls for the pedal’s active EQ section. Notably, the pedals switch is Vahlbruch’s own unique ‘MagTraB’ design, which uses a magnet implanted in the head of the switch pole. When this is moved, a sensor detects this and activates the circuit via a relay. As a heavy impact with the pedal isn’t connecting with any circuitry, the unit should last a lot longer before needing a switch replacement. It also means there isn’t that ‘clunk’ you might be used to when using traditional true-bypass switches.
The Kaluna lists for €339, and is available now. Find out more at vahlbruch-fx.com.
