“Thank God and Metallica for saving us”: Pickup truck crashes into family’s home – but their plans to see Metallica removed them from its path
A Virginia family has spoken of how their plans to see Metallica perform at Blacksburg’s Lane Stadium ended up potentially saving their lives.
David and Kristin McKee – parents to 14-year-old Metallica superfan Madeleine – say they went to bed earlier than usual on 6 May, to get enough sleep before the band’s show the following day [per Louder]. Usually, the family would stay up later and watch TV in their living room.

That decision to head to their bedrooms early, they say, took them out of the path of an out-of-control pickup truck, which smashed through their house and into their living room in the early hours of the morning.
Speaking to local TV news station WDBJ7, Kristin recalls: “[I asked David,] ‘Do you wanna sit up?’ And he was like, ‘Nah, I think I just wanna go on to bed.’ I said, ‘I’ll go on to bed, too.’ Then, just a few hours later, we heard a loud explosion, glass shattered. It was just madness from that point on.”
She continues: “We were so fortunate that, that night, my daughter could have walked down that hallway and found us in the rubble. I thank God every day, and Metallica, for saving us.”
The McKee family home is reportedly undergoing repairs, and they should be ready to move back in within six months.
Madeleine McKee discovered her love of Metallica through her dad and after hearing Master of Puppets in the fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, which spurred a resurgence of the thrash metal classic back in 2022. “That was mostly when it started a lot more for me,” she says.
Speaking at the time, Metallica said they were “totally blown away” by the reaction to Master of Puppets in the show.
“It’s an incredible honour to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show,” they said.
Though it would have been perfect, it’s too late for the McKees to be featured in Metallica’s new documentary, Metallica Saved My Life, which focuses on and celebrates the band’s fans…
