12-year-old Eddie Vedder thought he was getting a guitar for Christmas – but it turned out to be a vacuum cleaner

In an interview with CBS News, Vedder reveals the special story behind his first gifted guitar for his 12th birthday.

“My birthday’s December 23rd so I begged to have the two gifts put together to afford something as extravagant as an electric guitar, which I think was $115,” he says.
“I walked in Christmas morning and I could see the silhouette of it and my heart dropped. Then the lights came on and it was a vacuum,” he says.
However, the disappointment didn’t last as he was quickly surprised with a hidden Christmas gift. “Everybody finished opening their presents,” he continues. “I’m getting little chills [remembering this]. They said, ‘Oh, one more,’ and they pulled out a guitar case, so that was nice.”
The vacuum cleaner, however, didn’t go unclaimed either. Laughing, he adds: “How about my mom getting lucky getting a vacuum for Christmas?”
Vedder is currently on the road with Pear Jam as the band continues their Dark Matter US tour, celebrating their 12th studio album which came out in April this year.
