AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams hopes Malcolm Young is “looking down and liking” PWR UP
AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams says he hopes the late Malcolm Young is “looking down and liking” the band’s recent LP PWR UP.
Malcolm Young co-founded AD/DC in 1973 with his brother Angus. He died in 2017 at the age of 64. In a new interview with Bass Player Magazine, returning bassist Cliff Williams has reflected on his bandmate’s death, and spoken about what the late rhythm guitarist would have made of the band’s 17th record.
“[Malcolm was] a real strong character, like his brother. He wrote some awesome stuff and he was an unbelievable player to play with. A solid guy, a totally solid guy.”
Williams added that years spent playing together meant the band feels like Malcolm is still with the group in what they do, saying: “We were talking about this the other day – it’s like he’s still there. We can feel him in everything because of how long we were together. Not being soppy and hippie about it, but it’s a feeling that we all have, so hopefully, he’s looking down and liking it.”
Williams’ comments come as the album soars to the top of the global charts – hitting number one in the UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Noway, Sweden, the US and the band’s home country of Australia.
Since the album’s release, AC/DC members have often spoken about the influence of Malcolm Young on PWR UP. Last month, bandmate Brian Johnson said that “he would have been proud of” the album. Angus Young also spoke about the absence of any of Malcolm’s recorded parts on the record, saying: “He wouldn’t like me trying to splice up his guitar work.” Instead, ideas written by Malcolm are indeed present on PWR UP, Angus confirmed.
