Guitarist Adam Jones has shared an early demo of Tool’s Descending, the sixth track of the band’s 2019 album, Fear Inoculum. Take a listen below.

Early comp of what is now descending. Writing music Justin and I normally bring in potential riffs and demos – then the 3 of us tear them apart like wolves while DC stirs it up with the most opposite counter rhythm drumming (which actually does drives everything forward) Justin brought in this killer 7 melody which is now the main verse of the song. (He called it “bluegrass” as a working title). We jammed it a LONG time trying to find other cool working parts. Eventually I added the 9beat turnaround and a chorus. Then we arranged the intro -which came along very naturally. *The two guitar parts are recorded left and right stereo so feel free to try some headphones ~enjoy friends

Fans of Tool have been widely known to dissect and analyse the band’s tunes; which are often both musically and thematically complex. Along with the partial demo, Jones supplied a brief elaboration on the band’s creative process with Descending – revealing that the song’s septuple meter was born out of a contribution from bassist Justin Chancellor.
“Justin brought in this killer 7 melody which is now the main verse of the song. (He called it “bluegrass” as a working title)”, Jones wrote, “We jammed it a long time trying to find other cool working parts. Eventually I added the 9 beat turnaround and a chorus. Then we arranged the intro – which came along very naturally.”
Arriving roughly 13 years after 2006’s 10,000 Days, Tool’s fifth studio album, Fear Inoculum finally saw the light of release day on 30 August 2019. Recording sessions for the album took place with acclaimed engineer Joe Barresi, and was mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig.
Unfortunately, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – Tool have had to announce the postponement of their tour to support Fear Inoculum.
