According to EVH’s death certificate obtained by TMZ, the immediate cause of death was a cerebrovascular accident – or a stroke. Van Halen had also been suffering from a number of underlying conditions: lung cancer, pneumonia and myelodysplastic syndrome, a bone marrow disease.
The late guitarist had also been battling skin cancer on his neck and head for years.
As part of his final wishes, Van Halen was cremated and his ashes given to his son Wolfgang, TMZ reports. The ashes will be scattered off the coast of the town he lived in for years, Malibu, California.
In November this year, several weeks after Van Halen’s death, Wolfgang opened up on his father’s health struggles. He revealed that Van Halen was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and a brain tumour in 2017. At the time, doctors had told him he had six weeks to live.
