Gibson honours Jimi Hendrix with reproductions of his ‘69 Flying V and ‘67 SG Custom
To celebrate what would have been the 78th birthday of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, Gibson has introduced two new signature instruments – the Jimi Hendrix ’69 Flying V and Jimi Hendrix ’67 SG Custom.
Gibson Jimi Hendrix ’69 Flying V
This guitar is based on the Flying V that Hendrix played during his time with the Band Of Gypsys – and the same one he used during his last UK gig before he died.
Crafted by the luthiers from the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, this highly collectable instrument is limited to 125 right-handed models and 25 lefties.
The guitar’s mahogany body is completed by an aged Ebony finish by the Murphy Lab, a division of Gibson’s Custom Shop dedicated to building historic replicas. Paired with that is a mahogany neck with an authentic ’69 Flying V neck profile and a 22-fret fingerboard. There’s also a corian nut – a durable synthetic material that should last the life of the instrument.
Two Custom Bucker humbuckers are augmented by a trio of CTS pots – two volume controls and one tone. Staying true to the period, this guitar also sports a Maestro Short Vibrola.
Gibson Jimi Hendrix ’67 SG Custom
Another fine piece of work from the the Gibson Custom Shop, this SG Custom takes after the right-handed model Hendrix played on the Dick Cavett Show in 1969 – one of his rare television appearances. Like the Flying V, this guitar also sports a Murphy Lab aged finish, this time in Polaris White. It’s also limited to just 150 units, all right-handers.
Coupled to the guitar’s mahogany body is a mahogany neck with a 60s SlimTaper profile and 22 frets. The three pickups are ’68 Custom Humbuckers, which route to two pairs of volume and tone knobs. Meanwhile, there’s an ABR-1 bridge and a Long Maestro Vibrola. It also features aged gold hardware.
Other goodies
Both guitars come with some sweet case candy – in fact, the case interiors are custom-designed after some of Hendrix’s original outfits. Completing each instrument package are photographs of Jimi Hendrix with the original instruments from engineer Eddie Kramer’s personal archive, signed by Kramer himself. Pricing is $9,999 a piece.
Gibson TV also has a handful of special events lined up in celebration of the brand’s latest guitar launch; the Inspired By Hendrix series will launch later today (17 November) at 12pm CT.
