The concert, entitled Strange Things Happening: A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe is to celebrate the “Godmother of Rock n’ Roll and trailblazing performer”.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was not only one of the first-ever famous female guitarists, but she also influenced countless musicians such as Elvis, Little Richard, Johnny Cash and many others who defined 50s and beyond. She first gained popularity with her gospel recordings but was also incredibly popular amongst both R&B and rock ‘n’ roll audiences, something that was rare to achieve.
Not to mention she also popularised many now-established guitar techniques such as distortion, which had a profound influence on British Blues in the 60s, and artists like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and the late Jeff Beck, who have all cited her as an inspiration.
The event is being held in Austin, Texas, and will feature a parade of artists alongside a band finale from The Blinky Griptite Orchestra to honour SRT. Special guests will include Amythyst Kiah, Abraham Alexander, Betty Harris, Ruthie Foster, and Valerie June among many others.
“Sister Rosetta Tharpe is the Alma Mater to every rock, blues and soul fan,” says Abraham Alexander. “Every musician playing today is a biproduct of the doors that SRT has knocked down and the grounds she paved. She is a spirit that lives on today in every guitar player whether they know it or not, and it is an honour to celebrate her legacy.”
Gibson has also stated that $1 from every ticket sold to LUCK Reunion, as well as fundraising on-site will go to the Gibson Gives—the Sister Rosetta Tharpe Scholarship–which will support the next generation of gospel, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll players.
Strange Things Happening: A Tribute to Rosetta Tharpe is happening on Sunday 19 March 2023 at 11am Central Time at the LUCK Ranch in Austin, Texas, USA.
