“I don’t say they’re mine!”: Metallica’s Kirk Hammett reveals that he’s sold “a lot” of his guitars anonymously on eBay and Reverb
Ever copped a bargain guitar on eBay or Reverb? Well, it could very well have belonged to Metallica’s chief guitarist Kirk Hammett at one point in time…
In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Hammett has revealed that he’s started anonymously selling off his guitars to combat his ever-growing collection. “I’ll list them on eBay or Reverb and I don’t say they’re mine,” he admits. “I get rid of a lot of guitars that way!”

While revealing himself as the owner of his listings would certainly be a way to hike up the price and make a quick buck, Hammett seems to prefer the idea of someone getting a good guitar at a reasonable price. His primary desire is to pass his guitars on and “save [them] from solitary confinement”, as he believes guitar are made to be played, not just collected and displayed.
“I get anxiety because I believe guitars should be played,” he insists. “I don’t believe in just storing them away and forgetting about them – I feel guilty! So I have been on a quest to shrink my collection and get rid of the ones I don’t play.”
“There were a few that were only ever used on Death Magnetic – I played them on that tour, then as soon as that tour stopped they went into storage again as I’m not playing those songs,” he adds, noting that some guitars haven’t been touched since the World Magnetic tour 15 years ago.
As well as selling his guitars online, Hammett also notes two other ways he’s trying to shrink down his collection. He notes that his preferred way is a simple trade. “I try to trade them off because it’s better than just doing a cash deal,” he explains. “Everyone leaves with a smile on their face and has something they want! Another way is to just give stuff away.”
Hammett also expressed his love of trading back in April. “With trades, everyone walks away smiling, but cash deals don’t do that,” he told Guitar World. “You walk away feeling empty. It’s no different to purchasing a friggin’ milkshake or whatever.”
“The time of me spending that much on an instrument is long gone,” he added. “If I do find something, I’m instantly thinking about trades. It’s exactly what I used to do with comic books and movie posters. My strategy is the same: find the most unique models and coolest rarities and then just go for it.”
