Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are back with their second single as SatchVai – and it’s a ’70s-flavoured ode to the “glorious guitar”
After forming a partnership the guitar world had yearned for for years, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai – together SatchVai, naturally – are back with their second single, I Wanna Play My Guitar.
Following The Sea of Emotion – which landed last year – I Wanna Play My Guitar finds the two virtuosos dabbling in ’70s rock, with Jimmy Page and Angus Young-style riffs peppered with some two-handed tapping that would make Eddie Van Halen proud.

And the choice to channel that 1970s rock flair was a considered one; both Satriani and Vai were finding their footing in the ’70s, as they recall while speaking to Guitarist about the new song.
“This song depicts all that Joe and I used to think about as teenagers,” says Vai. “All of the things we loved about pounding rock ‘n’ roll and the glorious guitar. It is phenomenal for us to be able to present to you now our teenage aspirations in this song.
“I remember those days and how absolutely exciting it was to play the guitar. Our whole world revolved around it as if it were a mysterious monolith, as it is, and I know that there are teenagers right now who are feeling the same thing about this sacred instrument when they play it.”
Rounding out the track’s personnel are Pete Thorn on rhythm guitar, Marco Mendoza on bass, Kenny Aronoff on drums, and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple on vocals
“When I started writing this song, I had no idea how important the contributions from Glenn and Steve would be,” says Satriani. “What they brought to the track made it all happen.”
