This 1989 Takamine guitar played by Kurt Cobain could sell for $500k at auction
A left-handed 1989 Takamine guitar played by Kurt Cobain could fetch up to $500,000 at auction this May.
The guitar – an FP360SC acoustic electric model – was played by Cobain during a Nirvana recording session on 25 November 1991 in Hilversum, North Holland, prior to the band’s performance at Paradiso that same evening. It is due to be sold via Julien’s Auctions at the end of the month.

The guitar, which has been matched to photographs taken at the studio, was not owned by Cobain. According to Julien’s, the band’s equipment was already being set up for the gig that evening, meaning all of the gear used for the session was backline rental equipment, including this guitar.
The session was hosted by Dutch radio stations VPRO and VARA, and saw the band play through three songs including Leadbelly’s Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, a cover of Here She Comes Now by The Velvet Underground, and an “unnamed third song” which would later be identified as the unreleased demo, Horrified. You can hear material from the session below:
The guitar’s key features include a 25.5” scale length mahogany neck with a bound 20 fret rosewood fretboard, six chrome plated Takamine branded tuners, and a mother of pearl Takamine logo inlay on the headstock. The body hosts a solid spruce top, rosewood back and sides, multi-ply binding, a black plastic pickguard, and a rosewood bridge with a bone saddle, dot inlays, and white bridge pins. The guitar is finished in natural gloss and equipped with Takamine electronics.
The guitar forms part of a much larger collection of music gear being auctioned as part of the Music Icons sale from Julien’s – it is one of over 700 items due to go under the hammer across 30-31 May. Other items include a Warwick Dolphin Pro I bass, played by both Cobain and Krist Novoselic in the same session, and a Charvel EVH Art Series electric guitar signed and stage played by Eddie Van Halen in 2007.
There’s also a Grand-Suzuki Hummingbird guitar owned and played by Noel Gallagher up for sale, and a 1988 Pensa Suhr Custom HSS Stratocaster-style guitar gifted to Eric Clapton from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
