It’s something you’ve probably considered at some point – is it actually worth getting a cheap guitar and upgrading it? Affordable guitars can be pretty inviting, as is the idea of kitting one out with your own choice of electronics and hardware. But, when the hardware and pickups cost a good deal more than the actual guitar they’re going into, is it worth it, or are you doing the guitar equivalent of fitting a rocket engine onto a Toyota Prius?
There is not a straight yes or no answer to that question, really – it depends on your goals, your tastes, and your patience for your own inevitable screwups. But these days, with the quality of affordable instruments only getting better, and places like StewMac providing more access to tools, parts and guides than ever before, there’s perhaps never been a better time to give it a go.
Check out the video above, where I go through the hows and the whys of upgrading an affordable instrument, from replacing the hardware, increasing the reliability of the electronics and changing the sound with a new set of pickups.
All of this was made a lot easier with the tools and guides available at StewMac – find out more at stewmac.com.
