John Mayer celebrates launch of his own record label with new single, Tom and Jerry
Big things are happening in John Mayer World; after recently announcing a massive residency at the Las Vegas Sphere for 2027, the guitar legend has just released a brand-new single, Tom and Jerry.
The track marks Mayer’s first solo release since 2021, when he released his eighth studio album, Sob Rock.

Produced and written by Mayer alongside Grammy-winning producer Blake Slatkin, recorded at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles and mixed by veteran engineer Serban Ghenea, Tom and Jerry made its debut on Mayer’s SiriusXM channel Life With John Mayer on Thursday (22 October) before arriving in full today.
You can listen to the new single below:
As Mayer explains, the track’s name, “Tom and Jerry”, comes from the name he gave the voice memo he made when he first had the song idea.
“From that moment on, the adventure began in bringing that feeling to life,” the guitarist writes in an Instagram post. “I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating every time – I get to work with a group of incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists who will stop at nothing until the sound comes into focus and becomes a picture.”

The single’s release also coincides with the launch of Mayer’s own record label, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with Mercury Records.
“Working with [Mercury Chairman and CEO] Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” Mayer said in a statement [via Rolling Stone].
“The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
“John Mayer is one of the greatest artists of all time, and I couldn’t be prouder to welcome him to Mercury Records,” adds Tyler Arnold.
“We’re excited to be part of his next chapter and to partner with his label, Sob Rock Records, to help bring his creative vision to life.”
That’s not all that’s been happening in a whirlwind few months for John Mayer, though. Last month, the guitarist announced a partnership with PRS and Land Rover Defender to bring a palette of the Defender’s iconic colourways to his signature guitar, the Silver Sky.
