“John Lydon was alright – we got on quite well. It’s just that Sid Vicious was such a dick”: Roger Taylor recalls the first time Queen met the Sex Pistols
Queen drummer Roger Taylor has reflected on the infamous tense encounter that occurred with the Sex Pistols when the two bands were recording at the same studio in 1977.
At the time, Queen were working on what became News Of The World, while the Pistols were laying down their debut album, Nevermind The Bollocks…, when the two forces came into contact at Wessex Sound Studios.

Speaking to Classic Rock, Taylor says, “I really loved the Pistols album. It was [made with a] great producer, mate of mine, Chris Thomas. Because we were in the same studio for a while in 1976-77, somewhere around there. They were doing their first album, and it was dreadful at first until Chris came in and made a great record.”
Sid Vicious interrupted Queen’s session to taunt frontman Freddie Mercury over a comment he’d made in an NME interview about his love of ballet. Reports from other Queen insiders also recall the Pistols’ John Lydon crawling into their space on all fours.
“Sid put his head in the studio and said: ‘Hello, Freddie, are we bringing ballet to the masses?’ And Freddie said something like: ‘Oh, Mister Ferocious, we’re doing our best here…’” He goes on to add, “John [Lydon] was alright, actually. He was quite a character. We got on quite well. It’s just that Sid Vicious was such a dick.”
Earlier this year, Taylor and Queen guitarist Brian May spoke to Uncut about their own experience of recording a debut album, and the high-stakes that surrounded the experience: “We were ludicrously compliant on the first album because we were terrified that it was going to be our only chance to record,” said May.
“That’s the big difference between Queen and Queen II, the second album is the sound of us starting to get the sound we wanted,” added Taylor.
